Singapore Day 2016!

E-mail sent by Singapore, Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016 @ 10:39am

Organised and brought to you by the Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU), Singapore Day has seen the keen participation of overseas Singaporeans as volunteers in every city it’s been hosted in since 2007. Singapore Day is an event, by Singaporeans for Singaporeans. As such, we see this as a perfect occasion for Singaporeans, especially those of us here in San Francisco and the Bay Area, to step up and serve our fellow residents and visitors to our host city.

SingaporeConnect is pleased to have jointly organised Singapore Community Day 2015 with OSU, in support of demonstrating that the San Francisco Bay Area would provide the participation needed to make Singapore Day a spectacular event.

OSU is inviting YOU to be a volunteer this year at Singapore Day 2016! Each volunteer will only serve for one shift and will have sufficient time to enjoy other offerings of Singapore Day 2016.

Pre-requisites for Volunteers

  • Must be Singaporean
  • Must have successfully registered to attend Singapore Day 2016 with a Registration ID
  • Must have a heart to serve and with a pleasant disposition

Perks of being a Volunteer

There are many inherent non-tangible elements that make volunteering a meaningful and worthwhile experience when you give of your time, energy and skills in service and for the benefit of others. So the secondary benefits of being a volunteers would be as follows:

  • New friendships with fellow Singaporeans from other parts of the USA and Canada
  • A limited edition SG Day 2016 polo tee for while one’s on shift
  • A keepsake SG Day 2016 lanyard
  • Invitation to a volunteers’ brunch appreciation in San Francisco on 25 Sept 2016 (Sun)
  • An SG Day 2016 Certificate of Appreciation
  • Most importantly, a sense of self-fulfilment that comes with knowing that you had a part to play in making Singapore Day a memorable and meaningful outing for yourself and fellow Singaporeans

How to Sign Up as a Volunteer?

First, register to attend Singapore Day 2016, then, sign up at:

Once you have submitted the completed form online, you will thereafter be contacted by the organiser’s Volunteer Management team. Please have your Singapore Day Registration ID ready when registering to be a volunteer. All volunteers are also invited to join the Singapore Day 2016 Volunteers Facebook group at for more updates and event photos!

Haven't registered? Come join what is almost certainly likely to be the biggest gathering of Singaporeans in San Francisco, if not the West of the US! It is free and full of great food and activities for all ages. In fact, we even heard that some hawker stalls in Singapore will be closing their stalls in Singapore so they can be sharing their sought after skills in San Francisco! (Or did we even hear about some prizes including return tickets to Singapore?)

If you haven't registered, here's a quick guide to some questions some of you may have had about registration. A full FAQ is available at the registration web site.

You must pre-register. No drop-ins or at-the-entrance registration.

You, and all in your party, must bring a photo-ID (driver's license, Singapore IC, passport, or citizenship certificate) to match against your registration when entering the Singapore Day venue. Plus, keep it safe, please don't bring in weapons, prohibited items nor pets (except service animals).
Singapore Day is for Singaporeans, but non-Singaporeans can attend as friends or family of a Singaporean. A family can be a Singaporean's spouse and kids, or one's parents (and parent-in-law). A family cannot be one's brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, aunties, or other relatives. Those will have to register as their own "family" using their Singaporean member. As for friends (who could also be your non-Singaporean family members), each Singaporean can bring one, just one, very special friend. Here's a diagram if it helps:

Register at:

We recommend you complete this registration on a PC or tablet, especially if you have a family, as you will have to fill in a form with details of each member. It should take you about 5-15 minutes to enter in the information, after which you should get an email that you should print out or have ready on an electronic device to show a barcode that will be scanned at registration.

Once you register, you can't re-register nor change your registration unless you email OSU directly. Please feel free to share this email with your Singaporean friends, wherever they may be. All Singaporeans regardless of where they live are welcome to come make this a super gathering this September!

For those of you traveling from outside the Bay, in need of a hotel to stay in SF or a flight ticket over to SFO? SingaporeConnect is happy to share with you some deals we have helped worked out with United Airlines and Hotel Union Square. Do check our Promo page for more details.

Flights and Hotels for Singapore Day

E-mail sent by Singapore, Wednesday, June 1st, 2016 @ 1:07am

Dear all,

Hope everyone's happily getting started on their summer plans for 2016, and looking forward to Singapore Day 2016 in San Francisco, in just 116 days! Registration for Singapore Day starts in a little over a month, July, but we at SingaporeConnect have already been reaching out to secure some deals. We wish to share with you them, and also thoughts, especially for those of you who may be (or know those who are) coming in from out of town.

Accommodation: Room-sharing
We would like to get help with our Accommodation Team to come up with a system to pair those who would like a place to stay to a place. There is interest amongst some to offer their rooms to Singapore Day attendees only, fundamentally, get the appropriate degree of privacy and security. How do we create a system for pairing this without, say, asking people to list on Airbnb? Can we create this out of existing tools? Join the discussion here (please email if you have not been invited to the group and need an invite code):

Accommodation: Hotels
We have a deal with Hotel Union Square to offer SingaporeConnect attendees 15% off. See our web page for more details:

Interested to help offer more deals? Please contact us.

Travel: Ride-sharing
Just like room-sharing, there is interest to see if we can help pair those who are travelling from similar location to similar destination. For example, if a group would like to car-pool from Sacramento or Monterey to San Francisco, or even take a bus, train, or flight together. Again, there is some interest to coordinate this amongst Singapore Day participants and not asking them to list on a public forum. Join the discussion here (please email if you have not been invited to the group and need an invite code):

Travel: Flights
We have a deal with United Airlines to offer SingaporeConnect attendees up to 10% off. See our web page for more details:

Tech and Entrepreneurship Survey

E-mail sent by Singapore, Tuesday, April 26th, 2016 @ 10:38pm

Dear Members,

SingaporeConnect is in the position to recommend talented members to a reknowned VC and successful entrepreneur who will be visiting the Bay Area next month. We believe the meeting will be an excellent opportunity to get an update on the dynamic South East Asian entrepreneurship ecosystem, get funded, or simply, get enriched by the VC's breadth and insights.

We would like to extend an invitation to all interested members in the field of Science, Technology or Entrepreneurship to meet this individual over a complimentary sit-down dinner. In the interest of having a balanced group at the dinner, we will pass on your information to the VC's staff member to review and select those to be invited.

This dinner will be on May 5.

In addition, we have been asked to recommend some interesting Singaporean startups or research projects in the SF Bay Area to the OSU, so they can feature them at the upcoming Singapore Day (Sept 24). These asks, and possibly others in the future, have culminated in an interest to conduct a survey to best garner good responses from our community.

If you are interested, or know someone who could be, please visit:

to submit your details, by Apr 30.

Thank you!

Singapore Day 2016 - SingaporeConnect Engagement Team

E-mail sent by Singapore, Wednesday, March 9th, 2016 @ 11:49am

Great to have you on board the SingaporeConnect Engagement Team for Singapore Day 2016. Our mission is to help make SG Day 2016 even more successful by helping OSU feel the ground and take in ideas from the community. If we can, building something to incorporate in conjunction with SG Day is not out of the question, for example, an app, platform tie-in, or showcase. And again, none of this is "by command" of OSU - it is a voluntarily ground-up or grass-roots initiative by SingaporeConnect to help make SG Day 2016 rock.

We're giving Slack a try as a team collaboration system. All of you should have received an invite to the Slack team called:

You can directly access it at:

Or install an app on your computer, tablet or smartphone. If you're new to Slack, take a tour and check out the channels we have created. We currently have at least 6 of you on board, there were 21 who signed up, so hope to see more, well, Slackers, shortly?

If you really don't want to use Slack, you can still reply-to this email group and it will be sent to all.

For now, let's discuss, and I'll be the point of contact with OSU's SG Day team.  Sounds good?

Please also feel free to invite others - the Slack system is set up to allow any of you to invite new members to the team.

So please don't slack it off, let's start pushing out ideas fast so we all have time to make them a reality!
