CNY Year of Monkey Update

E-mail sent by Singapore, Saturday, January 30th, 2016 @ 12:14pm

Update on SingaporeConnect's Chinese New Year 2016 celebrations. We sent a call for volunteers in December and signed up 9 volunteers, in excellent roles such as registration, setup, design, and photography/videography. However, none of these volunteers were in the role of event organiser, food/drink coordinator, and games/entertainment. Practically speaking we would be unable to organise an event. Around the beginning of January, we reached out to the Singaporeans @ Stanford, a Singaporean students' association there, to check if they were organising an event. And yes they are. Would they have some more room for "friends"? Yes, they would be happy to help their fellow Singaporeans! How many? Well, they want to complete registration on their end (their registration deadline was a few days ago) first, then see how much more room they can get out of the restaurant (in Mountain View). They expect to reconcile and get an update on the available spots by this weekend, then we should be able to start doing registrations for the "SingaporeConnect Friends of S@S" at their CNY celebration dinner on Feb 20.

CNY 2016 Event Planning update

E-mail sent by Singapore, Wednesday, December 23rd, 2015 @ 6:51pm

Dear Members,

We are heartened by your support to help us organise a Chinese New Year event in 2016. Volunteers have signed up for these roles:

(Every 12.5% = 1 volunteer)

Let's not let the momentum dwindle. To have a successful event, we need the top two roles, Event Organiser and Location Coordinator, fulfilled too, and get started on event organising ASAP. We think the best date for CNY is Feb 20/21.

Most of the SingaporeConnect committee members have already been heavily involved in organising past CNY events, or will be in Singapore for CNY. We feel the energy and enthusiasm to do an event will be stronger with those who have not organised a CNY event yet, but have the time to take charge of this in the critical two weeks before the event. Perhaps you want to Yam Seng with your buddies? Or you miss giving your kids a Lion Dance show? Or you're thinking of some sort of mass-participation entertainment? You can make that a reality!

Please sign-up to volunteer here:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CNY2016

We will be contacting everyone who volunteered in January.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Desire to connect Singapore with the world? An internship opportunity from MFA

E-mail sent by Singapore, Thursday, October 22nd, 2015 @ 10:11am

Dear Members,

On occasion, we receive requests to broadcast job offers to the community. We typically do not honour these requests, but this one is rather interesting, thus we have elected to send it out. Perhaps some of you will be excited by and suited to the opportunity. Notably, the interviews will be held in the US, including at San Francisco.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Hi,

Greetings from the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)!  As part of our efforts to reach out to Singapore students studying abroad, we are planning to conduct a recruitment trip to the US in January 2016.   If you are considering a career or an internship with the Ministry, we would love to meet you!

2              With 49 Overseas Missions (OMs) across the globe, the Foreign Service presents infinite opportunities and the unique opportunity to travel the whole world in one career.  From being on the frontline of diplomatic negotiations to assisting distressed Singaporeans abroad, no two days are ever the same.  Your assignments will alternative between the Ministry’s headquarters (HQ) in Singapore and our OMs.  The work environment is dynamic and challenging.  If you are excited about a dynamic and challenging work environment, we urge you to consider joining the Ministry for a career like no other.

Undergraduate Internship Programme

3              For students in your second or penultimate year, you can apply for an internship to find out if the Foreign Service is the right career choice for you.  We offer 4-week internships in HQ and selected OMs.  For 2016, there will be 2 HQ runs from 16 May to 10 June 2016 and 4 July to 29 July 2016.  OM internships will take place in the period of May to September 2016, subject to the OM’s ability to host interns and the intern’s availability.

Full-Time Employment

4              For students in your final year of studies, we invite you to apply for the Foreign Service Officer (FSO) position.  Depending on your personal inclinations and strengths, you can choose to develop your career either along the two tracks: Political and Economic or Functional and Corporate.  The selection process would comprise an interview and paper-and-pencil tests, and an Assessment Centre (AC) for shortlisted candidates on the following day.

Selection Tests in US

5              To facilitate early consideration ahead of your graduation, we are offering an opportunity for you to undergo the selection process for internship or the FSO position on the following dates:

Dates (Tentative)

West Coast

(San Francisco)

23 Jan (Sat) – 25 Jan (Mon)

East Coast

(New York City)

29 Jan (Fri) – 31 Jan (Sun)

6              If you are keen to undergo the internship or FSO selection process, you are strongly encouraged to apply!  Depending on the responses, we may also conduct selections outside of San Francisco and New York.  Further details of the selection tests, including date and venue, and will be made known to shortlisted candidates at a later date.  As we have limited spaces, priority will be given to those who have registered their interest.  Please complete the attached form and send it to Brinda Cheng (brinda_cheng@mfa.gov.sg) by Saturday, 31 Oct 15.

7              More details on the internship and FSO position may be found on our website.  Please feel free to contact me should you have any other questions.  We look forward to receiving your applications and meeting you in the US!

Regards,

Brinda

Great California Shakeout

E-mail sent by Singapore, Wednesday, October 14th, 2015 @ 10:09am

Dear Members,

The Great California ShakeOut Drill is tomorrow, Oct 15, 2015. Always be aware that if you're in California, you're in an earthquake-prone area, so be prepared and ready any time in case one happens!

While some areas of California are more likely to have earthquakes than others (see below), all of California is at higher risk compared to the rest of the country. You could be anywhere when an earthquake strikes: at home, at work, at school, or even on vacation.

What we do now will determine our quality of life after our next big earthquake. Are you prepared to survive and recover quickly?

The Great California ShakeOut is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes: "Drop, Cover and Hold On." The ShakeOut has also been organized to encourage you, your community, your school, or your organization to review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies, and to secure your space in order to prevent damage and injuries.
